When does a marriage become legally valid in Thailand?

Answered by the family-law team at NYC Visa & Translation
Under section 1457 of the Civil and Commercial Code a marriage under Thai law is effected only by registration. A religious ceremony or a traditional Thai wedding creates no legal status on its own. Section 1458 requires that both parties consent to take each other as spouses and that the consent be declared openly before the registrar, who records it. Registration takes place at any district office (amphur) or khet office in the country; there is no residence requirement. Ask our Thai family-law team to review your documents by phone, LINE or email before you file.
Based on Book V of the Civil and Commercial Code as amended by the Civil and Commercial Code Amendment Act (No. 24) B.E. 2567 (in force 22 January 2025), the Family Registration Act B.E. 2478, the Child Adoption Act B.E. 2522 and the Immigration Act B.E. 2522, as at August 2026.
