Q1013. Can a family member interpret for a patient at a Thai hospital?

Interpreter at a meeting — interpreter kb q id
Interpreter at a meeting — interpreter kb q id

Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation interpreting team

Only as an emergency fallback. Relatives filter bad news, lack clinical vocabulary and have a personal stake in decisions about cost and treatment; children should never interpret for a parent. For consent to surgery or any high-risk procedure, use a professional interpreter and have the interpreter's name recorded in the medical file.
