On death the estate passes to the heirs immediately under Section 1599 of the Civil and Commercial Code, with six classes of statutory heirs listed in Section 1629. Wills may take several forms, including the ordinary written will with two witnesses (Section 1656) and the wholly handwritten will (Section 1657). Registered assets such as land or bank accounts normally require a court-appointed estate administrator under Section 1713, and inheritance claims carry a 1-year limitation period under Section 1754.
