Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation legalization desk

Overseas notarization does not automatically make a document legally effective or acceptable for every purpose in Thailand. A notary may certify a signature, an oath, or a copy, rather than confirm the underlying document’s legal effect. First, ask the Thai recipient whether notarization is appropriate for your document. Then confirm the required authentication route for the notary’s signature, including competent-authority certification, Royal Thai Embassy legalization, and Thai MFA legalization where applicable. Arrange any required Thai translation and check substantive requirements, such as prescribed wording for a power of attorney. A common pitfall is notarizing a photocopy when the Thai authority requires an original civil record. Verify the required certification and document format with the receiving Thai authority before filing.
