Q1078. What alternative routing applies if a foreign document originates from a country without a Thai embassy?

Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation legalization desk
A country without a resident Thai embassy may still fall under the jurisdiction of a Thai embassy located elsewhere. First, use Thailand’s official diplomatic mission information to identify the mission accredited to the issuing country. Ask that mission whether it handles legalization for those documents and which local foreign-ministry authentication, originals, translations, and submission arrangements it requires. If that route is unavailable, ask the Department of Consular Affairs whether authentication through the issuing country’s embassy accredited to Thailand is acceptable. Do not select a neighboring Thai embassy solely because it is geographically convenient. A common pitfall is obtaining authentication from a mission that lacks jurisdiction or cannot verify the relevant signature. Verify the accepted route with the responsible Thai mission before filing.
