Q1099. Do Thai Marriage Visa applications require foreign civil certificates to be MFA-legalized?

Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation legalization desk
Legalization requirements depend on whether you mean a spouse-based visa application abroad or an extension of stay in Thailand. They also depend on where the marriage was registered and which foreign civil certificates support the application. First, obtain the checklist from the responsible Thai embassy, consulate, or Immigration office. If relying on a foreign marriage certificate, ask whether it must be authenticated, translated into Thai, legalized, and recorded with a Thai district office; a Thai family-status record such as Kor Ror 22 may be relevant. A Thai-registered marriage ordinarily involves Thai marriage records instead. A common pitfall is assuming that a foreign marriage certificate accepted for an earlier visa automatically satisfies the documents required for a later extension. Verify the required civil records with the responsible official authority before filing.
