Q1178. Can expired foreign documents be submitted for Thai consular legalization?

Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation legalization desk
Expiration does not produce one universal answer: authentication eligibility and acceptance for a Thai application are separate questions. Identify whether the document has actually expired or merely exceeds the receiving authority’s permitted age. Send its issue date, expiry date, document type, and intended use to the responsible Thai mission and receiving Thai authority. Ask whether it can be authenticated as a historical record or whether a renewed or recently issued version is required. If replacement is necessary, obtain it before paying for translation and legalization. A common pitfall is assuming legalization renews an expired license or makes an old police clearance current; it does neither. Verify validity and authentication requirements with the responsible official authorities before filing.
