Q1188. What acceptance criteria govern foreign electronic notary documents at the Thai MFA?

Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation legalization desk

Foreign electronic notarization should not be assumed acceptable to the Thai MFA merely because it is valid in the issuing country. Identify whether your document is digitally signed, remotely notarized, or simply a scan of a paper notarization. Provide the relevant embassy or Department of Consular Affairs with the document format, issuing jurisdiction, and available signature-verification method. Ask whether the electronic original can follow the required authentication chain or whether an authenticated paper version is necessary. Preserve the original digital file and any verification certificates while obtaining guidance. A common pitfall is printing a digitally signed PDF and assuming the printout retains verifiable electronic authentication. Verify the accepted format and authentication route with the relevant official source before filing.
