Marriage Registration, Marriage Equality & Foreign-Spouse Paperwork
A marriage exists in Thai law only once it has been registered before a district registrar under section 1457 of the Civil and Commercial Code, and section 1458 requires both parties to declare their consent openly before that registrar. The Civil and Commercial Code Amendment Act (No. 24) B.E. 2567, published in the Royal Gazette on 24 September 2024 and in force from 22 January 2025, allows two persons of any gender to marry and raised the minimum age in section 1448 to 18. A foreign national normally needs an affirmation of freedom to marry issued by their embassy in Thailand, translated into Thai and legalised by the Department of Consular Affairs before a registrar will accept the file.
