Study routes into Thailand

The Non-Immigrant ED visa covers enrolment at a licensed institution: universities, Ministry of Education accredited language schools, international schools, and certain vocational and religious study programmes. Muay Thai and other skills training sit in a separate treatment depending on the licence the school holds. The visa is issued by a Thai mission abroad on the strength of an acceptance letter and school licensing documents, then extended inside Thailand in increments the school's category determines.

Scrutiny of language-school ED visas has tightened in recent years. Offices now commonly test attendance records and, for some categories, basic language ability at extension. A school that cannot produce its licence and attendance evidence is the applicant's problem, not only the school's, so choosing an institution with a clean extension record matters more than the tuition price.

Our scope on an ED file

  • Legalisation and certified translation of foreign degrees, transcripts and birth certificates for dependants.
  • Preparing the financial narrative so bank evidence matches the declared study period.
  • Coordinating school documentation so the licence copies carry the correct signatures and dates.
  • Extension preparation inside Thailand, including attendance and progress evidence.
  • Dependant planning where a Non-Immigrant O follows the student's status.

Common mistakes and how we avoid them

Enrolling with an unlicensed school
Verify the Ministry of Education licence and ask for prior extension outcomes before paying tuition.
Poor attendance during the first term
Attendance is the primary extension evidence; treat it as a visa condition.
Foreign transcripts submitted untranslated
Legalise in the country of issue, then translate before lodgement.
Overstaying between the visa and the first extension
Diarise the permitted-to date; extension applications must be filed inside the permission.

More questions we are asked

Can I convert a tourist visa to ED inside Thailand?
Conversion is possible at some offices where the remaining permitted stay is sufficient and the school documentation is complete, but it is discretionary and not available everywhere.
Can my spouse and children join me?
Dependants generally apply for Non-Immigrant O based on the student's status. The dependants' documents need legalisation and translation, which is usually the longest part.
Does an ED visa allow work?
No. Employment requires a separate work permit, and most ED categories are not a practical basis for one.
How long can I stay on the ED route?
It depends on the programme. Degree study tracks the enrolment period; language study is renewed in shorter increments with a practical ceiling that offices apply.
What happens if I change schools?
The new school issues fresh documentation and the extension basis changes, so plan the switch inside the current permitted stay rather than after it lapses.
