Q1003. Can I authorize a representative or agent to submit my personal documents at the MFA Consular Department?

Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation legalization desk

A representative can generally submit personal documents for MFA legalization when the required authorization and identification are provided. Obtain the Department of Consular Affairs’ current representative-submission checklist and any prescribed Power of Attorney form. Complete and sign the authorization, identify the representative, and specify whether it covers submission, collection, or both. Prepare the applicant’s identification copies, the representative’s identification, and the documents requiring legalization; confirm any certification or stamp-duty requirements applicable to the authorization. Overseas-signed authorizations may require additional formalities, so check those separately. A common pitfall is authorizing submission but omitting collection, leaving the representative unable to complete the requested task. Verify representation requirements with the Department of Consular Affairs before filing.
