Q1011. Must Thai-to-English document translations submitted to the MFA be performed by officially registered accredited translators?

Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation legalization desk
For ordinary Thai-to-English translations, MFA legalization generally does not require the translator to belong to a single official accreditation registry. What matters is meeting the Department of Consular Affairs’ current requirements for the document, translation, and translator’s certification. First, identify the document type and intended destination. Next, obtain a complete English translation, including stamps, annotations, and any reverse-side entries. Have the translator sign the required certification and provide any identification or supporting details requested under the applicable procedure. A common pitfall is assuming an agency’s “certified translator” label automatically makes a translation acceptable; missing text or inconsistent names can still require correction. Verify current requirements with the Department of Consular Affairs before filing.
