Q1133. Can I use a NAATI translation of my Thai driver's license to drive legally in Australia?

Answered by NAATI Certified Practitioner · NYC Visa & Translation
A NAATI-certified translation can help you use a Thai driver’s licence in Australia, but it does not by itself make driving legal. Your eligibility depends on the state or territory, your visitor or resident status, your licence validity and the applicable vehicle class. Check the relevant road authority, such as Transport for NSW, VicRoads or Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads, for its accepted translation formats and overseas-licence rules. You generally need to carry the original valid licence, not just the translation. An International Driving Permit may be another accepted supporting document, depending on local rules. Rental companies can set additional conditions. Translate both sides of the licence and match your name to your passport.
