Q1060. Do personal foreign civil documents require prior foreign ministry approval in the home country?

Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation legalization desk
Prior authentication by the home country’s foreign ministry is common for personal civil documents, but it is not a universal requirement. The competent authority may instead be another designated office, and applicable treaties or accepted alternative routes can change the process. Obtain the birth, marriage, divorce, or death record in the version required by the Thai recipient. Then check the responsible Royal Thai Embassy’s instructions for preliminary certification and authentication in the country of issue. Complete those steps before embassy submission where required, and prepare any necessary Thai translation. A common pitfall is using your nationality country’s authentication process for a record issued elsewhere. Verify the correct issuing-country authentication route with the responsible Royal Thai Embassy before filing.
