NAATI Translation — Thai Driving License for Australia
A Thai driving licence records vehicle permissions, issue and expiry dates, and stated conditions. NAATI translation conveys that information; it does not grant Australian driving rights or convert the licence. Send both sides, the destination state and intended use, confirm scope, check numbers and dates, then receive the requested format. Verify translator certification in NAATI Directory. Timing follows file review; check visitor or resident rules and the state’s translation pathway before ordering.

What should you prepare for this document?
- Provide uncropped front and back with legible identifiers and expiry dates.
- Specify destination state and whether the purpose is temporary driving, conversion or car hire.
- Check the actual recipient’s translation and supporting-document requirements; states differ.
What may lead to a request for replacement documents?
- Missing reverse-side conditions or licence details.
- Guessing Australian classes from Thai vehicle descriptions.
- Ordering without checking the destination state’s translation pathway.
These are preparation checks, not universal rejection rules. The recipient determines the evidence required.
What should not be guessed or changed?
For NSW licence transfer, Service NSW lists translations from Multicultural NSW, Home Affairs and specified Korean or Taiwanese offices for their respective licences. Independent NAATI translators are not listed as a general pathway. Check the submission channel before ordering; do not guess Australian classes or substitute translation for the original licence.
Verify the receiving body’s requirements
Content reviewed 8 October 2026. Check the recipient’s current requirements before filing; translation does not guarantee an application outcome.

Frequently asked questions
Do all states accept the same NAATI translation format?
Do not assume so. States have different translation pathways, and temporary driving may have different requirements from licence conversion. Identify the destination state and purpose, then check the actual receiving authority’s website before ordering. NAATI certification is not proof that every submission channel accepts the document or grants identical driving rights.
Does a bilingual Thai licence still need translation?
Check whether every detail requested by the recipient is available in English, including reverse-side text, vehicle descriptions and restrictions. English wording on the front alone does not settle the question. Ask the recipient to confirm the need and format before commissioning translation; a bilingual card is not automatically sufficient for every purpose.
Will the translator assign an Australian licence class?
Translation preserves the vehicle permissions actually recorded; it does not decide equivalence or add driving rights. The state authority determines the relevant class and testing conditions. Clarify unclear Thai wording with the issuer instead of guessing from category A or B systems used elsewhere. Any regulatory assessment remains separate from translation.
Can translation replace the licence or an IDP?
No. Translation makes the original licence understandable; it is not a new licence or an international driving permit. Check which documents the state and rental company require you to carry, including the original licence where specified. A translated PDF alone does not establish driving entitlement, and a rental agreement does not override state rules.
What if my licence is close to expiry?
Check the actual expiry date against the intended use and recipient’s requirements. Translation cannot extend validity or change dates. Ask the Thai issuer about renewal if necessary before travel, then check which version the destination authority requires. Do not treat a six-month remaining-validity suggestion as a universal legal requirement.
What should I send for a driving-licence quote?
Send clear front and back images, the destination state, visitor or resident status, intended use and any recipient request. Confirm which text needs translation and the delivery format before agreeing price and timing. A free initial enquiry is not a determination of driving rights or a promise that licence-conversion testing will be passed.
