Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation certified translation team

Foreign business licences for Thai commercial operations arise when a foreign company proves its home-country status (for DBD filings, BOI applications, or bank compliance) or when a Thai company evidences a foreign partner's licensing. The chain: certified copy of the licence from the issuing authority, legalisation (home foreign ministry plus Royal Thai Embassy), Thai translation, MFA certification (200/quoted on request per stamp). Practical points: licences with expiry dates must be valid at submission — an expired licence restarts the chain; regulated-industry licences (financial services, telecoms, food and drug) often have annexes listing permitted activities, and the annexes must be translated because the Thai officer assesses the scope, not just the existence of the licence; and where the licence is issued by a sub-national authority (a US state, a German Land, a Swiss canton), the legalisation chain runs through that authority's state-level certification before the federal layer — skipping the state layer is a common cause of embassy refusal. For BOI applications, the licence translation is part of a larger document set and should use terminology consistent with the application forms. Confirm with the receiving office whether it needs the licence alone or the underlying registration documents as well.
