Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation certified translation team

Import-export document translation in Thailand centres on the customs declaration set. The core documents: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or air waybill, certificate of origin, insurance certificate, and product-specific certificates (health certificates, phytosanitary certificates, free-sale certificates, test reports). The workflow: most shipping documents are issued in English and Thai Customs accepts English documents directly — translation into Thai is needed mainly for product certificates in third languages, for dispute or post-clearance audit files, and for documents going to other agencies (FDA, Thai Industrial Standards Institute). Where translation is needed: product descriptions must match the tariff classification being declared — a translation that describes the goods differently from the HS code declared is a red flag in customs audit; quantities, weights, and values are transcribed exactly; and certificates for regulated goods (food, cosmetics, medical devices, chemicals) must use the terminology of the Thai regulator's product registration. For exports from Thailand, the direction reverses: Thai certificates (health, free-sale) are issued with English versions by the issuing agency in most cases — request the bilingual version at application rather than translating afterwards. Confirm with the customs broker or the receiving agency which documents actually need translation before commissioning.
