Q1057. How to translate certificate of residence documents for government agency submission?

Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation certified translation team
A certificate of residence in Thai practice is the immigration-issued document (from the local immigration office) confirming a foreigner's address in Thailand — used for driving licence applications, vehicle registration, bank accounts, and some visa filings. It is issued in Thai (some offices provide bilingual versions on request) and needs no translation for domestic use. The translation question runs the other way: when the Thai residence certificate is used abroad (e.g., proving Thai residence to a foreign tax authority, bank, or pension office), it is translated into English and certified at the MFA (200/quoted on request per stamp), then legalised by the destination country's embassy where required. There is also the reverse document: a foreign residence certificate used in Thailand (e.g., for tax-residency claims under a double-tax treaty, or for pension portability). That follows the standard chain: home-country issuance, legalisation (foreign ministry plus Royal Thai Embassy), Thai translation, MFA certification. Practical points: immigration-issued residence certificates are valid for a short window (commonly 30 days) for their stated purpose — order close to the transaction date; the address on the certificate must match the TM30 record; and for treaty claims, the Revenue Department wants the foreign tax authority's own residence certificate form, not a generic address proof. Confirm the receiving agency's current requirements before applying.
