Q1119. What corporate banking rules govern foreign entity bank account opening document translations?

Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation certified translation team
Foreign entities opening bank accounts in Thailand face each bank's own KYC checklist — there is no single national standard, and the document translation requirements follow the bank's list. The typical document set for a foreign corporate account: certificate of incorporation, articles or memorandum of association, register of directors and shareholders, board resolution authorising the account and the signatories, and beneficial-ownership declarations — all translated into Thai or English per the bank's requirement (most Thai banks work in both, but the account-opening forms are Thai), with legalisation through the chain (home-country authentication, Royal Thai Embassy legalisation) for the corporate documents. Rules that matter: the board resolution must follow the bank's prescribed content — banks provide their own resolution formats, and a resolution that does not match the bank's form is rejected; the beneficial-ownership declaration follows the anti-money-laundering framework (ultimate owners at the prescribed threshold, typically 25%); and the signatories' identity documents follow the bank's verification procedure in person or through the bank's foreign correspondent. Practice points: confirm the specific bank's checklist before legalising anything — the legalisation chain is expensive and slow, and documents legalised to the wrong specification must be redone; some banks require the documents to be recent (within 3–6 months); and for accounts supporting visa or work-permit purposes, the bank letter confirming the account follows the immigration office's format expectations. Timing: legalisation chain 2–6 weeks, translation on a timeline confirmed after document review, bank processing per the bank. Confirm the bank's current requirements first.
