Q1232. What formal distinctions separate American English from British English in official filings?

Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation certified translation team
American and British English differ in official filings in ways that are usually cosmetic but occasionally substantive. The cosmetic layer: spelling (organize/organise, center/centre, -ize/-ise conventions), date format (the American month-day-year versus the British day-month-year — this one is genuinely dangerous: 03/04/2026 means March 4 to an American reader and 3 April to a British one, so official translations write dates in an unambiguous form, spelling the month), number formatting (both use comma-thousands and point-decimals, so this is safe), and vocabulary (the everyday differences). The substantive layer: legal terminology differs because the systems differ — the corporate vocabulary (the American 'articles of incorporation' versus the British 'articles of association' and 'memorandum'; the officer titles; the share versus stock terminology), the court and procedural vocabulary (the pleadings' names, the court structures), the property law vocabulary (the American and English land law terms are not interchangeable), and the statutory references. A translation into 'English' for a specific jurisdiction uses that jurisdiction's terminology — an American reader of British corporate terminology understands it but a filing may be scrutinised. The certification angle: for Thai purposes, either variety is acceptable as the translation language (the MFA does not distinguish) — the variety matters for the foreign receiving body. Points that matter: specify the destination jurisdiction when commissioning a translation into English; the dates are always written unambiguously in official translations; and the personal and place names are transcribed, never adapted. Practice points: for documents used in multiple English-speaking jurisdictions, the neutral international register with unambiguous dates is the safe choice.
