What is Thailand's LTR visa and who qualifies?

The Long-Term Resident visa administered by the Board of Investment covers four groups: Wealthy Global Citizens, Wealthy Pensioners, Work-from-Thailand Professionals and Highly-Skilled Professionals. It grants a ten-year stay issued as five years plus a five-year renewal, annual instead of 90-day reporting, airport fast track, and access to a digital work permit. Dependants — a spouse and children under 20 — are included up to four per principal holder. Confirm current requirements with the embassy or official portal before filing.

  2. Q1309. Is the 17% flat tax rate for LTR holders real?

Yes, but only for the Highly-Skilled Professional category. A royal decree provides a flat 17% personal income tax rate on qualifying employment income earned in targeted industries, subject to conditions set by the Revenue Department and the BOI. The other three LTR categories are taxed under normal rules, with a separate exemption available on qualifying foreign-sourced income. Plan with a Thai tax adviser before relocating income.

  3. Q1310. Which LTR category fits a remote worker?

Work-from-Thailand Professional. The employer must be a listed public company abroad or a private company that has operated for at least three years with revenue meeting the BOI threshold, and the applicant must meet personal income and experience criteria. Where the employer cannot meet those corporate tests — common with startups and individual clients — the Destination Thailand Visa is usually the practical alternative.
