Q1014. What is a Blocked Account for German student visa?

Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation team
A blocked account, or Sperrkonto, is a restricted-access bank account used to demonstrate that you can fund living expenses while studying in Germany. You deposit the required funds before travel, then access them according to the account’s withdrawal restrictions after completing the provider’s activation steps. The required balance and monthly release amount can change, so confirm current figures with the German Embassy in Bangkok or Germany’s Federal Foreign Office. Check whether an alternative, such as an accepted scholarship or formal financial commitment, meets your circumstances. Compare providers’ setup charges, account access, and refusal-refund conditions. Keep the official funding confirmation: an ordinary bank statement or transfer receipt may not satisfy the blocked-account requirement.
