Q1040. Is Schengen visa multiple entry by default?

Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation team
No, a Schengen visa is not multiple-entry by default; the issuing consulate may grant one, two, or multiple entries. You can request multiple entry, but should explain why your genuine itinerary or recurring travel needs justify it. Check the visa sticker’s “number of entries” field rather than assuming your request was accepted. Also distinguish entry permission from the visa’s validity dates and authorized duration of stay. Leaving Schengen for the UK or Ireland and then returning normally requires another entry, while traveling between Schengen countries does not. Confirm current stay-limit rules with the European Commission or issuing embassy, and review your sticker carefully before booking additional trips.
