Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation team

An Affidavit is a sworn statement made before an authorized officer (such as a Notary Public or consular officer) affirming that its contents are true. It is common in visa and marriage matters — for example, the affirmation of freedom to marry that foreign nationals need before registering a marriage in Thailand, or financial support declarations. In Thailand, such documents are made at the relevant embassy or before a Thai Notarial Services Attorney, then authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Note that false statements under oath carry legal liability, so only accurate information should be declared.
