Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation team

The main steps for an import-export operator in Thailand: (1) register a legal entity (company or partnership) with the Department of Business Development (2) register for VAT with the Revenue Department (3) register as an importer-exporter with the Thai Customs Department and enrol in the e-Customs system for electronic declarations (4) for controlled goods — food, drugs, cosmetics, and similar — obtain product-specific licences from the relevant agency such as the Thai FDA or the Department of Foreign Trade (5) some products must pass Thai Industrial Standards (TISI) checks. Foreign nationals setting up an import-export company must also consider the restrictions under the Foreign Business Act. Trade documents used with overseas authorities often need certified translation. Our team assists from company registration and customs enrolment through to translating and certifying trade documents. This is general guidance; requirements and fees change — always verify with the PDPC, ETDA, the Thai Customs Department, or the Department of Foreign Trade before proceeding.
