Thai Driving License Certification in Thailand

Each foreign licensing authority decides whether it wants a certified copy, a translation, an International Driving Permit or a record letter from the Department of Land Transport. Check its list first.

Certification scope and key checks

Licence exchange abroad is decided by the destination road authority. Some accept only translations from translators they approve; others request a licence-history letter from Thailand's Department of Land Transport. A notary can certify a copy, not driving entitlement.

For short visits, check whether the destination requires an International Driving Permit issued by the Department of Land Transport — a different document from a certified translation.

Documents to prepare

  • Valid original Thai licence
  • Passport
  • Destination authority's checklist

Procedure for this document

  1. Identify whether a copy, translation, IDP or DLT letter is needed
  2. Translate and certify in the accepted format
  3. Arrange onward certification only where specified

Overseas use: confirm the recipient’s route

Notarization is not required for every public record, and some uses need no onward legalisation. Confirm whether the recipient needs an original, copy, translation or specific certification before arranging MFA and embassy steps where applicable.

Thailand deposited its accession on 30 June 2026. The Apostille Convention is scheduled to enter into force for Thailand on 28 February 2027. Do not assume Thai Apostilles are available before then. Even after entry into force, document scope and treaty relations with the destination must be checked.

Questions before booking

Can I drive abroad with a translated Thai licence?
Not always. Some countries require an IDP or a licence exchange or test; check the destination's rules.
Does the licence need MFA legalisation?
Only if the recipient asks; many authorities accept the specified translation alone.
Are MFA and embassy legalisation always needed?
No. Ask the recipient to confirm the certification, language and onward steps. Notarization, translation and legalisation are distinct; do not perform every step automatically.
How are fees and timing assessed?
After reviewing the form, copies, signers, language and onward steps, we provide a quote and indicative schedule before work. Authority queues and outcomes are not guaranteed.
What should I send before booking?
Send the record type, destination country, receiving authority and its checklist through a direct contact channel. Redact personal information unnecessary for the initial enquiry.
