Certificate of Single Status / No Impediment Certification in Thailand

A Thai marital-status certificate is issued by the civil registry and is not a marriage certificate. Check whether the destination wants this, an embassy letter or a sworn statement; validity is set by the recipient.

Certification scope and key checks

Thais marrying abroad usually need to show they are free to marry. A commonly used document is the marital-status certificate from the civil registry, which should not be confused with marriage registration documents used after a marriage.

Some countries require an embassy-issued document or a statement sworn before local officials instead or as well. Check with the registry where you will marry before obtaining Thai documents. Recency is the recipient’s rule, not three to six months everywhere.

Divorced or widowed applicants should also prepare evidence that the earlier marriage ended. Names in translations must match the passport. Certification does not guarantee the destination will permit the marriage.

Documents to prepare

  • Marital-status certificate from the Thai civil registry, or the document the destination specifies
  • Checklist from the registry where you will marry
  • Divorce or death records for a previous spouse, if any

Procedure for this document

  1. Check the marrying country’s checklist first
  2. Obtain the registry document within the recipient’s time frame
  3. Translate, certify and legalise only as required

Overseas use: confirm the recipient’s route

Notarization is not required for every public record, and some uses need no onward legalisation. Confirm whether the recipient needs an original, copy, translation or specific certification before arranging MFA and embassy steps where applicable.

Thailand deposited its accession on 30 June 2026. The Apostille Convention is scheduled to enter into force for Thailand on 28 February 2027. Do not assume Thai Apostilles are available before then. Even after entry into force, document scope and treaty relations with the destination must be checked.

Questions before booking

How long is a single status certificate valid?
It depends on the authority where you will marry. Check its current list before applying so the document is not too old when filed.
How is it different from a marriage certificate?
The status certificate is used before marriage to show eligibility; marriage registration documents evidence a marriage already registered.
Are MFA and embassy legalisation always needed?
No. Ask the recipient to confirm the certification, language and onward steps. Notarization, translation and legalisation are distinct; do not perform every step automatically.
How are fees and timing assessed?
After reviewing the form, copies, signers, language and onward steps, we provide a quote and indicative schedule before work. Authority queues and outcomes are not guaranteed.
What should I send before booking?
Send the record type, destination country, receiving authority and its checklist through a direct contact channel. Redact personal information unnecessary for the initial enquiry.
