Q1013. How to process Nordic language translations (Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish) for use in Thailand?

Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation certified translation team
Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, and Finnish documents share a practical feature: civil extracts (personbevis, folkeregister extracts) can usually be issued in English directly by the national population register, which removes one translation layer. For Thai use the chain is: issuance by the national register or authority, legalisation by the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (or the designated legalisation office — in Sweden this is handled through notarius publicus plus the MFA; in Finland, the Digital and Population Data Services Agency plus MFA), legalisation by the Royal Thai Embassy in Stockholm (which is accredited to Sweden, Finland, and the Baltic states) or Copenhagen (Denmark), then translation into Thai or English and MFA certification in Thailand (200/quoted on request per stamp). Cautions: Nordic population register extracts show personal identity numbers that must be transcribed exactly; older church-book records exist only in the national language and need a translator familiar with historical entries; and pension or social insurance certificates for retirement-visa purposes must show the payment amount and frequency explicitly — a generic 'certificate of entitlement' is often rejected by Thai immigration. Plan 4–7 weeks for the full chain. Confirm requirements with the receiving office.
