Q1021. How to translate multi-language birth certificates for official identity proof in Thailand?

Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation certified translation team
Birth certificates for Thai official use (school enrolment, nationality applications, marriage registration, visa extensions for children) follow this process. Step 1: obtain a recent original from the issuing authority — Thai offices commonly require issuance within 3–6 months, and older originals may need re-issuance in the country of origin. Step 2: legalisation in the country of issue (the foreign ministry layer plus the Royal Thai Embassy accredited to that country) — Thailand is not an apostille state, so an apostille alone is not sufficient. Step 3: translation into Thai (or English first for third languages, then Thai where required) by a recognised translator. Step 4: MFA certification of the translation (200/quoted on request per stamp). Step 5: submission to the receiving office — for a child's birth registration at a district office, the amphoe will also require the parents' documents, so the birth certificate translation is usually one item in a set. Critical details: the child's name romanisation must match the passport exactly; parents' names on the certificate must match their passports; and where the certificate shows a name change or adoption annotation, that annotation must be translated too — omitting it is a common rejection cause. Confirm the district office's current document list before filing.
