Q1024. What is the correct workflow for translating death certificates for estate administration in Thailand?

Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation certified translation team
Death certificates for Thai estate administration are needed at three points: the district office (to record the death of a Thai resident or the death abroad of a Thai national), the court (for probate or estate administrator appointment), and asset holders (banks, Land Department, securities companies). The chain: legalisation in the country of issue (foreign ministry plus Royal Thai Embassy), translation into Thai, MFA certification (200/quoted on request per stamp). Estate-specific points: the Land Department and most banks require the certified translation to be recent — commonly within 3–6 months of submission; where the death certificate lists a cause of death in medical terminology, the translation must render it accurately because some offices cross-check against hospital records; and if the deceased used multiple name spellings across assets (a common issue with older Thai-Chinese families and with foreign nationals), the translation set often needs a supporting name-linkage document such as a name-change certificate or an affidavit. For estate court filings, the court may additionally require translations of the will, the heir list, and marriage/birth certificates of heirs — plan the translation set as one coordinated job so names are consistent across every document. Confirm the receiving office's recency and format rules before commissioning.
