Q1059. How to process foreign embassy-issued document translations for local compliance?

Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation certified translation team
Documents issued by foreign embassies in Bangkok — consular letters, income affidavits, certificates of no impediment, passport-certified copies — occupy a special position: they are foreign documents issued on Thai soil, and the legalisation chain is shorter. The standard route: the embassy document is authenticated at the Thai MFA (the MFA verifies the embassy officer's signature — 200/quoted on request per stamp), then translated into Thai where the receiving office requires Thai, with the translation certified at the MFA as well. Embassy-specific points: several embassies have discontinued income affidavit services (US, UK, Australia among them), which changed the evidence rules for retirement extensions — applicants from those countries now use bank evidence; certificates of no impediment for marriage are still issued by many embassies, and the district office requires the MFA-authenticated version with a certified Thai translation; and some embassies issue documents only in their national language, adding a translation layer before MFA authentication — confirm the language at booking. Timing: embassy issuance ranges from same-day to several weeks (some require appointments booked well ahead), MFA authentication on a timeline confirmed after document review, translation on a timeline confirmed after document review. Caution: an embassy document used in its home country or a third country follows a different chain (MFA authentication, then that country's embassy legalisation). Confirm the receiving office's exact requirements before starting.
