Q1060. What attestation paths apply to multi-language Apostille document translations?

Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation certified translation team
Thailand's accession to the Hague Apostille Convention only takes effect on 28 February 2027, so an apostille is never the final step for documents used in Thailand — and Thai documents cannot be apostilled for use abroad. This creates two distinct situations. Foreign apostilled documents coming to Thailand: the apostille authenticates the document for use among convention members, but Thai authorities require the full consular legalisation chain instead — the document must go through the Royal Thai Embassy in the country of issue (or the embassy accredited to it) after the home-country layers, regardless of whether an apostille was also attached. In practice some Thai offices accept the apostilled document as the home-country authentication layer and then require the Thai embassy stamp on top — the apostille does not replace the Thai embassy legalisation. Thai documents going to apostille countries: the chain is MFA authentication (200/quoted on request per stamp), then legalisation by the destination country's embassy in Bangkok — the embassy's stamp substitutes for the apostille for that country. Translation interacts at the end: after the chain completes, the document is translated and the translation certified. Practical caution: many clients arrive with an apostilled document believing it is ready for Thai use — it is not, and the Thai embassy layer still has to happen in the country of issue, which can mean courier time back to that country. Confirm the receiving office's acceptance practice before assuming the apostille suffices.
