Q1079. What specialized banking and investment document translation guidelines exist?

Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation certified translation team
Banking and investment document translation follows guidelines set by the receiving institution more than by any general rule — each Thai bank, the Bank of Thailand, and the SEC have their own documentary practices. The main document classes and their rules: account opening and KYC for foreign customers — passports are not translated, but supporting documents (proof of address, corporate documents for business accounts) are translated into Thai or English per the bank's checklist, with certification where the bank requires it; loan applications by foreigners or foreign companies — financial statements, income evidence, and collateral documents translated with certification, and the bank's credit department specifies the list; Bank of Thailand filings (foreign exchange reporting, licensing) — prescribed forms with specified language requirements, generally Thai with English accepted for supporting documents; and SEC-regulated investment documents — prospectuses and fund documentation under the SEC's disclosure rules. Practice points: banks' internal checklists differ — the same document accepted in English at one bank needs certified Thai translation at another, so obtain the specific bank's requirement first; signatures on bank forms are witnessed per the bank's procedure, which translation cannot substitute for; and for investment documents, the SEC's English disclosure standards apply to funds marketed in English. Caution: for compliance-sensitive filings (anti-money-laundering documentation), the translation must be complete — summaries are not accepted. Confirm the receiving institution's current checklist before commissioning any translation.
