Q1209. How to handle complex technical terminology in specialized engineering translations?

Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation certified translation team
Complex technical terminology in specialized engineering translations is managed through terminology engineering — a discipline, not a talent. The terminology workflow: extract the source document's terminology (the technical terms, the abbreviations, the standards references, the part names) before translating; research each term's established target-language equivalent (the sources: the standards bodies' bilingual materials — IEC, ISO, and the Thai Industrial Standards Institute's terminology, the manufacturer's own bilingual documentation, the industry's settled usage); build the project glossary with the client's or the domain expert's approval; and translate against the glossary with consistency enforced (the same source term always renders the same target term). The hard cases: terms with no established equivalent (new technology, proprietary systems) — the options are a descriptive translation, a loanword with explanation, or the source term retained with a gloss, decided by the document's purpose and the readers; terms with false friends (words that look translatable but differ technically — 'stress' in mechanics versus common usage); and the standards' own terminology (a standard's defined terms must match the standard's official translation where one exists). Points that matter: the translator's domain knowledge is the foundation — terminology research cannot substitute for understanding the engineering; the client's own terminology (the company's product names, the project's established terms) overrides general usage; and the glossary is a project asset — maintained across the document family and the project's life. Practice points: for large engineering projects, the terminology phase is scheduled at the start (days for the glossary, saved many times over in the translation); and the translation memory tools enforce the consistency mechanically.
