When do I need a Schengen Airport Transit Visa?

You need a Schengen Airport Transit Visa when your nationality and transit circumstances fall under the relevant country’s airport-transit rules, even if you remain airside. A Thai passport alone does not normally trigger the common Schengen airport-transit requirement, but national rules and individual circumstances must still be checked. Consult the embassy of the country where you will change planes. Crucially, an airport-transit visa does not authorize entry into Schengen. Collecting checked baggage, changing airports, or taking a connecting flight between two Schengen countries may require a short-stay visa instead. Send the airline your complete itinerary and confirm that an airside transfer is possible with your tickets and baggage arrangements. Confirm current requirements with the embassy or official portal before filing.

  1. Q1034. When do I need a Schengen Airport Transit Visa?

  2. Q1035. How does China 144-hour visa-free transit work?

China’s former 144-hour visa-free transit scheme has been expanded into a 240-hour arrangement for eligible travelers at designated ports, so older guides may be outdated. The basic transit pattern is country or region A → mainland China → a different country or region B, with confirmed onward travel and compliance with permitted travel areas. A return routing from Thailand through China directly back to Thailand does not meet that third-destination transit pattern. Thai ordinary-passport holders may instead qualify under the separate China–Thailand visa-exemption arrangement. Check China’s National Immigration Administration and the Chinese Embassy in Thailand for current eligibility, permitted ports, stay calculations, and any restrictions relevant to your exact itinerary.

  3. Q1036. What is the difference between US C-1 and B1/B2?

A US C-1 visa is for immediate and continuous transit through the United States, while B1/B2 covers permitted business visits and tourism. Choose based on what you actually intend to do, not simply which appointment seems easier to obtain. If you plan to stop for sightseeing or visit relatives rather than merely connect onward, a visitor visa may be the appropriate category. Travelers holding a valid B visa can generally use it for transit, subject to admission requirements. The United States generally does not offer international airside transit without immigration clearance. Check the US Department of State’s guidance and prepare an itinerary that clearly explains your stop and onward journey.

  4. Q1037. Do I need a UK DATV as a Thai passport holder?

Thai passport holders generally do not need a UK Direct Airside Transit Visa if they remain airside and do not pass through UK border control. However, your complete itinerary matters more than the words “airport connection” on your booking. Baggage collection, an airport change, or a connection without an available airside transfer can require you to enter the UK, bringing different transit rules into play. Use the official GOV.UK “Check if you need a UK visa” tool with your nationality, route, and immigration documents. Ask the airline whether baggage is checked through and whether your connection stays airside. Do not assume a visa or residence permit from another country automatically provides an exemption.
