Q1071. Do I need MFA legalization before embassy?

Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation team

You often need Thai MFA legalization before destination-embassy legalization for Thai-issued documents, but the correct sequence depends on the document and receiving country. Start by asking the overseas recipient exactly what it requires: a certified translation, an authenticated original, embassy legalization, or a different route. Then check the destination embassy’s instructions and Thailand’s Department of Consular Affairs requirements. A translator’s certification or lawyer’s stamp does not automatically replace government authentication. Foreign-issued documents may need authentication in their country of origin rather than following the same process as Thai certificates. Also distinguish a visa application attachment from a document intended for civil registration, court, or employment use overseas; the legalization requirements may be different. Confirm the sequence before paying for unnecessary steps.
