Q1053. Do documents bearing an official Apostille stamp require secondary legalization by the Thai MFA?

Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation legalization desk

An Apostille stamp alone does not determine whether Thai MFA legalization is required. The answer depends on whether the Apostille Convention is in force between Thailand and the issuing country when you submit, whether the document falls within its scope, and any applicable exemption. Where the Convention applies, covered documents generally should not require additional diplomatic or consular legalization, although translation requirements can remain. Otherwise, the usual authentication chain may still be necessary, potentially including a Royal Thai Embassy and Thai MFA. A common pitfall is assuming that an issuing country’s Convention membership automatically makes its Apostille sufficient in Thailand. Verify current treaty applicability and submission requirements with the relevant embassy and Department of Consular Affairs before filing.
