Q1001. How to process multi-language document translation and legalization for use in Thailand?

Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation certified translation team

For a multi-language document to be accepted by a Thai authority, the workflow runs in four stages. Stage 1: translation into Thai (or English where the receiving office accepts English) by a translator whose certification the receiving body recognises. Stage 2: certification of the translation — for Thai–English pairs this is done at the Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), at quoted on request per stamp (standard, about 3 working days) or quoted on request per stamp (express, next working day). Stage 3: for third languages (Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, etc.), the MFA does not certify the translation directly — the document is translated into English first, certified, and then re-translated or verified by the relevant embassy's sworn translator where required. Stage 4: submission to the end authority (immigration, court, Land Department, DBD), each of which has its own recency rules — most require the certification to be less than 3–6 months old. Practical cautions: names must match the passport spelling exactly across every document in the set, and a translation certified before the underlying document was legalised will be rejected, so the order of operations matters. Confirm the exact requirement list with the receiving office before filing.
