Q1034. How to execute multi-language Power of Attorney translations for authorized proxies in Thailand?

Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation certified translation team
Powers of attorney for use in Thailand divide into two directions. Foreign POA for Thai use: the POA is signed before a notary in the country of execution, legalised through the chain (foreign ministry plus Royal Thai Embassy), translated into Thai, and certified at the MFA (200/quoted on request per stamp). Thai offices — especially the Land Department — are strict on POA content: the powers must be specific (a general 'manage my affairs' POA is rejected for property transactions; the Land Department requires transaction-specific powers and often its own standard form, Tor Dor 21, for land dealings), the grantor and grantee names must match passports exactly, and the POA must be within its validity period at the transaction date. Thai POA for use abroad: signed before a Thai notarial services attorney, authenticated at the MFA, then legalised by the destination country's embassy, with translation into the destination language where required. Cautions: a POA for litigation in Thai courts has its own form requirements under the Civil Procedure Code; a POA executed by a company must be accompanied by the corporate authorisation (board resolution) translated the same way; and some countries' embassies require the signer to appear in person for the legalisation of a POA — check the embassy's current rules before booking. Confirm the receiving office's form and content requirements before drafting.
