Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation certified translation team

French civil and legal documents (acte de naissance, acte de mariage, casier judiciaire, K-bis corporate extract) follow the non-apostille legalisation chain for Thai use. The typical sequence: issuance by the French mairie or tribunal de commerce (copies from service-public.fr are accepted for some civil acts), legalisation by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nantes (the legalisation centre handles all of France), legalisation by the Royal Thai Embassy in Paris, then translation into Thai or English in Thailand with MFA certification (200/quoted on request per stamp). For documents going the other direction (Thai documents for French use), the order reverses: Thai MFA certification first, then French Embassy legalisation in Bangkok. Practical points: French civil acts are often issued as multilingual standard forms under EU Regulation 2016/1191, but those multilingual versions are designed for EU use and Thai offices may still require a sworn translation; the casier judiciaire (bulletin n°3) can only be requested by the person concerned, which affects power-of-attorney arrangements. Timelines run 4–8 weeks for the full chain. Confirm the receiving authority's requirements before commissioning translation, since some Thai offices accept the embassy-legalised French original with a certified Thai translation only.
