Q1145. What language proficiency standards govern IELTS and TOEFL score report translations?

Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation certified translation team
IELTS and TOEFL score reports are, in practice, almost never translated — and understanding why saves applicants money. The governing reality: both tests are English-language assessments issued in English by the testing organisations (British Council/IDP/Cambridge for IELTS, ETS for TOEFL), and the receiving institutions (universities, immigration authorities, professional bodies) read them in English directly; the score report's authenticity is verified through the testing organisation's official score-sending service, not through the paper report — most institutions require scores sent directly from the test administrator. Where translation questions actually arise: when the score report is part of a larger document set being translated for a Thai authority (a scholarship file, a civil service application), the report is included in the set with its scores transcribed exactly — the band scores or section scores are numeric and carry over unchanged; and when a Thai authority needs the test's nature explained (what IELTS band 6.5 means), an explanatory note accompanies the translation rather than altering the report. Points that matter: score validity is two years for both tests — a translated expired score is still expired; the Test Report Form number and the candidate details must match the passport exactly; and for Thai documents supporting the application (the Thai-language parts of the file), the translation direction reverses. Practice points: order official score reports sent directly to the receiving institution — this is the standard expectation; keep the candidate's copy for reference; and confirm the receiving body's minimum scores and accepted test versions (IELTS Academic versus General Training matters) before booking the test.
