Q1179. What IT service standards govern service level agreement (SLA) translations?

Answered by the NYC Visa & Translation certified translation team
Service level agreements are the operational heart of IT and outsourcing contracts, and their translation must preserve the measurement architecture exactly — because the SLA is where the money moves when service fails. The SLA's operative systems: the service level metrics (availability percentages, response times, resolution times, throughput) — the metric definitions are the critical content: 'availability' measured monthly versus annually, including or excluding planned maintenance, measured at which points — a translated SLA that shifts the measurement definition changes the commercial deal; the service credits regime (the credit amounts, the calculation, the caps, and whether credits are the sole remedy) — the credit schedule is a table of numbers and conditions transcribed exactly; and the reporting and governance (the service reports, the review meetings, the escalation path). Rules that matter: the exclusions (what does not count against the metrics — customer-caused outages, force majeure, agreed maintenance windows) are as important as the targets; the measurement and monitoring provisions (whose tools measure, how disputes over measurement resolve) decide real disputes; and the SLA's interaction with the main agreement (the SLA is usually a schedule — the main agreement's liability caps and termination rights frame it). Practice points: translate the SLA with the main agreement's defined terms consistent; for ongoing service management, the monthly service reports follow the SLA's format — keep the terminology stable; and for regulated Thai entities (banks under the Bank of Thailand's outsourcing rules), the SLA must satisfy the regulator's content requirements. Coordinate with IT counsel on the remedy structure before finalising.
