How foreigners extend a tourist stay in Thailand in 2026: who qualifies, the 30-day extension at immigration, TM7, required documents, fees and common mistakes.

Who can extend their stay in Thailand
Most foreigners entering Thailand for tourism receive a visa exemption or a tourist visa, and nearly all of these can be extended once at a local immigration office. Under the rules in effect since 15 September 2026, the standard visa exemption for tourism is 30 days for nationals of around 60 eligible countries (shorter periods apply to a small number of nationalities, and visa-on-arrival follows separate rules). The exact number of days you receive depends on your nationality and how you entered, so check the entry stamp in your passport — it is the authoritative record of when your permitted stay ends.
Nationals of countries that enter under a bilateral visa exemption with shorter periods may receive fewer days, and visa-on-arrival entries follow different rules. If your plans might exceed your permitted stay, arrange the extension well before the last week, not on the final day.
The 30-day extension: where and when to apply
The standard tourism extension grants an additional period (commonly 30 days) and is applied for in person at the immigration office covering your place of residence in Thailand — for most people in Bangkok this is the Chaengwattana government complex. Applications are generally accepted up to and including the last day of your permitted stay, but arriving earlier in that window gives you room to fix missing documents without cutting it close.
Bring your original passport, a completed TM7 application form, one passport-size photo, and the extension fee (commonly the current official rate (confirm before filing)). Many offices also ask for proof of your address in Thailand, such as a hotel booking or your residence details. Requirements can vary slightly between offices, so confirm the current checklist with your local office before you go.
- Passport with entry stamp and TM.6 arrival card
- Completed TM7 extension application form
- One passport-size photo (4x6 cm)
- Extension fee (current Immigration Bureau rate)
- Proof of address: hotel booking or residence details
Documents in foreign languages must be translated
If you present supporting documents issued in another country — for example proof of funds, insurance papers, or letters from an employer abroad — Thai immigration may require certified Thai translations. Having these prepared in advance is the single most common way to avoid a second trip to the office.
This is where a professional translation service earns its fee: we translate and prepare supporting documents for immigration submissions, and check your full document set for completeness before you apply. We do not and cannot guarantee visa outcomes — the decision always rests with the immigration officer.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
The most frequent mistake is applying on the last day with an incomplete set, then getting a same-day rejection for a missing photo or form field. The second is assuming every nationality gets the same exemption-plus-extension pattern — shorter exemption periods exist for some nationalities, and the rules were adjusted in September 2026. The third is confusing the 90-day reporting rule with extensions: reporting applies to stays beyond 90 days and is separate from the extension application itself.
Finally, never overstay while waiting to apply. Overstaying incurs daily fines and creates an unfavourable record that can complicate future entries into Thailand.

คำถามที่พบบ่อย
How long can foreigners stay in Thailand without a visa in 2026?+
Under the rules in effect since 15 September 2026, nationals of around 60 eligible countries receive a 30-day visa exemption for tourism, extendable once at immigration. A few nationalities receive shorter periods. Exact periods depend on nationality and current rules — always verify with the latest official announcement or your entry stamp.
How much does a tourist visa extension cost?+
The tourism extension fee is set by the Immigration Bureau and can change, so confirm the current rate at the immigration office before paying.
When should I apply for the extension?+
Apply at your local immigration office before your permitted stay expires — ideally within the final week rather than on the last day, so you have room to fix any missing documents.
Can you guarantee my extension will be approved?+
No. We prepare and translate your document set and check it for completeness, but the decision always rests with the immigration officer. We recommend verifying current requirements with your local office before applying.
