Questions (36)
- Q1252. How is the 5-7 business day NAATI turnaround calculated?
A quoted 5–7 business day turnaround should be calculated from the provider’s agreed start point, not automatically from your first enquiry. Ask whether work starts after payment, receipt of readable documents, confirmation of passport spellings or completion of all these steps. Also establish whether that starting day counts as day one, which office calendar applies and which public holidays are excluded. Missing pages, unclear text or later changes to the source document may affect the agreed schedule. Request an actual target delivery date in writing and clarify whether it means delivery of a certified PDF or dispatch of a paper copy. Translation turnaround is separate from courier delivery, legalisation and Australian authority processing.
- Q1301. What makes a translation NAATI certified?
Fees depend on the documents, destination and urgency. Send your documents for a written quote after review — no prices are published. Any government or embassy fees are set by the authority; verify them directly before filing.
- Q1321. Do NAATI translations expire?
The translation itself does not expire, but the source document may. Police certificates, bank letters and status certificates are usually accepted only within three to twelve months of issue depending on the visa stream, so a fresh original and a fresh translation are needed once the source expires.
- Q1322. Why does language direction matter for certification?
NAATI certifies a practitioner for a specific direction. Certification for Thai into English does not automatically cover English into Thai. Thai documents lodged in Australia must be translated by a practitioner certified for Thai into English, so tell us the target language before the job starts.
- Q1330. How far ahead should I order translations?
Allow at least two weeks for a set of three to five documents. Translation takes estimated after we see the documents; the remaining time covers re-obtaining any original that is faded, outdated or spelled inconsistently with the passport, which is the most common cause of delay.
- Q1359. Should Thai documents be legalised before or after translation?
If the recipient only asks for a NAATI translation, translate straight away. If they also require Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs certification, legalise first at the Department of Consular Affairs and then translate the document together with the legalisation stamp, so the translation covers every mark on the page.
- Q1360. Does Thailand joining the Apostille Convention change NAATI requirements?
The Apostille Convention takes effect for Thailand on 28 February 2027 and changes how the public document itself is authenticated, not how a translation is certified. Australian authorities will still expect translations from a NAATI certified practitioner, and until that date the existing consular legalisation route applies.
- Q1361. Why must every document use the same romanised spelling?
Assessors match identity across documents by exact spelling. If a birth certificate and a transcript render the same Thai name differently, the file can be treated as referring to two people. We lock a per-client spelling list, anchored to the passport, across the whole document set.
- Q1362. My passport spells my name unusually. Can the translator correct it?
No. The translator transliterates according to convention and anchors the spelling to the passport, adding a note that the spelling follows the travel document. Deviating from the passport creates an inconsistency that is far more likely to cause a refusal than an unusual spelling.
- Q1379. Can different translators handle documents in one application?
That is permitted, but the transliteration of names, places and qualifications must be aligned across the set. Divergent spellings across two certified translations can suggest two different individuals, so a shared glossary is applied to every file in the same case.
- Q1380. Can I ask for specific institutional terminology to be used?
Yes. Send the university's own English course and award names, or any glossary the receiving body published, and the translator will follow that official wording and note its source so the assessor can verify it against the institution's website.
- Q1408. Will a NAATI translation be accepted by a Thai government office?
No. Thai offices verify that the Department of Consular Affairs has legalised the translator's signature; NAATI status is not part of that test. Australian documents destined for Thailand follow the DFAT, Thai embassy, translation and consular legalisation chain instead.
- Q1409. Can a Thai document be apostilled today?
Not yet. Thailand's accession to the Hague Apostille Convention takes effect on 28 February 2027. Until that date, Thai documents still run through Department of Consular Affairs legalisation and, where required, the destination embassy.
- Q1410. Should certification or legalisation come first?
For an Australian destination, NAATI certification is the operative step and legalisation is added only where the recipient specifies it. For a Thai destination, the consular chain is the operative step and NAATI adds nothing. Getting the order wrong usually means paying twice.
- Q1436. Can you certify a translation I produced with AI?
No. The certifying practitioner takes professional responsibility for the whole text as their own work, and signing off text produced by someone or something else conflicts with that duty. We translate from the source instead.
- Q1437. How is my personal data handled?
Files are retained only as long as needed to reissue and to support later verification, and deleted on request. Handling follows Thailand's Personal Data Protection Act B.E. 2562 (2019).
- Q1438. Can a lost file be reissued?
Yes, against the original job number and at no further translation charge where the content is unchanged. A newly issued source document is a new job because the text and dates differ.
- Q1439. Can one translation be used for several authorities?
Yes, unless a body imposes its own format or currency rule. What usually expires is the underlying document, such as a police certificate, rather than the translation.
- Q1440. How do I start a job?
Call 083-2494999, message LINE @NYC168, or email contact@nyclegal.co.th with the files, the receiving authority and your lodgement date. A quote and delivery date come back the same business day.
- Q1450. Which spelling of my name should the translation use?
Always the passport spelling, even when it differs from standard romanisation. Officers compare the translation against the passport first. Where older documents use a different spelling, we add a translator's note explaining that both refer to the same person.
- Q1451. I changed my name several times. Which certificates must be translated?
All of them. The officer needs an unbroken chain from the name on the birth certificate to the name in the current passport. Thai name-change certificates and title-change certificates form that chain; a missing link is one of the most common reasons files are held.
- Q1452. Do stamps, seals and handwritten notes need translating?
Yes. A complete translation accounts for everything visible on the page, including seals, signatures, reference numbers and manuscript annotations, each marked as such in brackets. Omitting the reverse side of a Thai civil document is a frequent cause of rejection.
- Q1453. How are Thai Buddhist Era dates handled?
We convert to the Gregorian calendar in the body of the translation and retain the original figure in brackets, for example 2540 (B.E.) = 1997 (A.D.). Showing both allows the officer to reconcile the translation against the source without arithmetic.
- Q1454. Part of my document is unreadable. What happens?
The translator marks the passage as illegible at the exact position rather than guessing. If the unreadable part is material, such as a document number or date, we advise obtaining a fresh certified extract from the issuing office before proceeding.
- Q1469. My translation was rejected. What now?
Send us the refusal notice. We determine whether the issue is the rendering, the certification format, or a missing authentication layer. Where the fault lies with the translator, we correct and reissue at no charge.
- Q1470. Can you guarantee my visa will be approved?
No provider can. The decision rests solely with the deciding authority. What we control is the accuracy and completeness of the translation, and free correction where a rejection stems from a translator error.
- Q1473. Certified Translator versus Recognised Practising Translator: what is the difference?
Certified means the practitioner passed NAATI testing in that language pair. Recognised Practising applies to languages NAATI does not test, evidencing active practice instead. Thai-English is tested, so insist on Certified for this pair.
- Q1474. Why does language direction matter on the seal?
Certification is directional. An officer checks that the direction printed on the seal matches the work submitted. A practitioner certified only in the opposite direction cannot validly certify your file, and the whole bundle is usually returned.
- Q1475. Can a NAATI interpreter certify my documents?
No. Interpreting and translation are separately credentialed. Written certification requires a practitioner certified for translation. Confirming this before ordering avoids paying for a document that will not be accepted.
- Q1480. How do I place an order?
By phone, LINE or email using the details on our contact page. There is no online shopping cart, because every job requires a source check and confirmation of name spelling before an accurate price and timeline can be quoted.
- Q1490. Is there work you will not accept?
We do not alter content away from the source, produce translations from documents showing signs of tampering, or certify documents the requester has no right to hold. Where the source is internally inconsistent, we ask you to resolve it with the issuing office first.
- Q1494. Will terminology stay consistent across my whole document set?
Yes. We build a case glossary from the first document, locking renderings for personal names, agency names, job titles and institutions. Inconsistency between documents in one bundle is a common trigger for clarification requests.
- Q1495. Why do authorities insist on a fresh certified extract?
A certified extract is issued by the originating office with a live seal and issue date, whereas an ordinary photocopy evidences nothing about currency. Many authorities require issue within three to six months, so starting from the right copy avoids repeating the work.
- Q1496. How are multi-page sets kept intact?
The certification states the total page count and page order, and the source copy used is bound with the translation as one set. Do not unstaple and rebind sets yourself; broken continuity and damaged seals are grounds for refusal.
- Q1497. When is back-translation worth paying for?
For clinical research instruments, patient-facing questionnaires and high-value contracts, where a second translator renders the target text back to verify fidelity. Routine civil documents lodged with visa authorities do not require it.
- Q1500. What exactly is included in your service?
Source completeness check, name verification against the passport, translation, senior review, certification with seal and statement, PDF delivery, and optional printed copies with courier. Destination authority fees, government charges and shipping are quoted separately and are not included.
