What the DTV is and who it is for

The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) is a long-stay visa introduced for remote workers, freelancers, and people joining recognized soft-power activities such as Muay Thai training, Thai cooking courses, medical treatment, or music festivals. It allows multiple entries over several years, with each stay permitted for an extended period.

It is not a work permit: DTV holders cannot take employment with Thai companies. It is designed for people earning income from abroad or participating in approved activities.

Core requirements

Applicants generally need to show financial evidence (a bank balance meeting the published threshold), proof of remote work or enrollment in an eligible activity, and standard identity documents. Requirements are set by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and may be applied slightly differently by each Thai embassy or consulate.

Applications are made through Thai embassies and consulates abroad or the official e-visa system, depending on your location. Always check the current requirements of the specific mission where you will apply.

Documents that often need translation

Most DTV applications are filed in English, but supporting documents issued in other languages — employment contracts, company registration, enrollment letters, bank statements — may need a certified English or Thai translation depending on where you apply.

If you later convert to another long-stay status inside Thailand, or use foreign documents with Thai authorities (marriage certificates, birth certificates, name-change records), certified Thai translations and sometimes MFA legalization become necessary.

Common mistakes

The most common problem is financial evidence that does not match the required format — screenshots instead of official bank letters, or balances that dipped below the threshold. The second is applying at a mission whose document expectations differ from what you prepared.

Another frequent issue is assuming the DTV allows working for Thai clients or companies — it does not. For that, a work permit and a different visa category are required.
