A practical 2026 guide to Thailand work permit documents for foreign employees: degree certificates, police clearances, marriage certificates, certified translations into Thai, and MFA legalization steps.

Why document preparation decides your work permit timeline
For most foreign employees in Thailand, the work permit itself is handled by the employer's HR or legal team — but the documents that support it are the applicant's responsibility. Degrees, transcripts, police clearances, marriage certificates and previous employment letters issued abroad usually need certified translation into Thai and, in many cases, legalization before the Ministry of Labour will accept them.
This guide explains which documents typically need translation and legalization in 2026, in what order to prepare them, and where applications most often stall. Requirements vary by nationality, job category and BOI status, so always confirm the current checklist with your employer and the Ministry of Labour before submission.
Documents that usually need certified translation into Thai
Education documents: degree certificates and academic transcripts are the core of most applications. They must be translated into Thai by a qualified translator, and the translation is typically submitted together with the original or a certified copy. Names must match your passport exactly — even small spelling differences cause queries.
Police clearance certificates: many categories require a criminal record check from your home country (and sometimes from Thailand as well). Foreign-issued clearances need certified Thai translation, and because clearances expire, timing the translation and legalization around the issue date matters.
Civil status documents: marriage certificates (for dependent visas or name verification), birth certificates of accompanying children, and name-change documents all require certified Thai translation when issued abroad.
The legalization chain: what order things happen in
A typical chain for a foreign-issued document looks like this: notarization or certification in the issuing country → authentication by that country's foreign ministry → legalization by the Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate in that country → certified translation into Thai in Thailand → submission. Some documents follow the reverse order, with translation first and the Thai MFA legalizing the translation. The correct sequence depends on the document type and issuing country.
Documents from countries party to the Hague Apostille Convention are a common source of confusion: Thailand is not a party to the Convention, so an apostille alone is generally not sufficient — Thai embassy legalization is usually still required. Confirm the current position with the Thai embassy in the issuing country before proceeding.
Practical timeline and how we help
Start document collection at least 6–8 weeks before your intended start date: police clearances and embassy legalizations are the slowest steps. Keep digital scans of everything, and never book non-refundable travel before your visa and permit pathway is confirmed by your employer.
NYC Visa & Translation provides certified Thai translations of degrees, police clearances and civil documents, MFA legalization coordination, and notarized copies — the document side of your work permit file. We are not a law firm and do not guarantee permit approval; decisions rest with the Ministry of Labour. Always verify current requirements with official Thai government sources.

คำถามที่พบบ่อย
Do I need to translate my degree into Thai for a work permit?+
Yes, in most cases. Foreign-issued degrees and transcripts must be translated into Thai by a qualified translator and submitted with the original or a certified copy. Names must match your passport exactly.
Is an apostille enough for Thai work permit documents?+
Generally no. Thailand is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so documents usually still require legalization by the Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate in the issuing country. Confirm the current requirement with the embassy before proceeding.
How long does document preparation take?+
Allow 6–8 weeks for the full chain: police clearances, embassy legalizations and certified translations are the slowest steps. Starting early avoids delaying your employment start date.
Can a translation company guarantee my work permit will be approved?+
No. Approval is solely at the discretion of the Ministry of Labour. Be cautious of any provider promising guaranteed approval. We ensure your translated and legalized documents are accurate and complete against the official checklist.
