Who the marriage visa is for

The Non-Immigrant O visa based on marriage is for foreigners legally married to a Thai national who want to live in Thailand long-term. The marriage must be legally registered — a ceremonial wedding alone is not enough.

The typical path is: register the marriage, obtain a Non-O visa (from a Thai embassy abroad or by converting inside Thailand), then extend the stay annually at immigration based on the marriage.

Financial requirements: two routes

The annual extension requires financial evidence through one of the standard routes: a bank balance meeting the published threshold held for the required seasoning period, or a monthly income meeting the published threshold shown through the accepted evidence.

The bank route requires the money to sit in a Thai bank account for the required period before applying — transferring money in right before the application does not work. The income route has its own evidence requirements that have tightened over the years; confirm the current accepted evidence with your immigration office.

Documents — and what needs translation

Foreign documents in the file — divorce decrees from previous marriages, name-change records, foreign marriage certificates — generally need a certified Thai translation, and many must be legalized by the issuing country and the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs before immigration accepts them.
