Two separate things: the visa and the work permit

Working in Thailand legally requires both a Non-Immigrant B visa (or an eligible long-stay category) and a work permit issued by the Ministry of Labour. The visa lets you stay; the work permit lets you work. Having one without the other is not enough.

The typical sequence is: the Thai employer prepares corporate documents, you obtain a Non-B visa from a Thai embassy abroad, enter Thailand, and then the employer applies for your work permit.

What the employer must provide

The bulk of a work permit application is the employer's paperwork: company registration, shareholder list, financial statements, tax filings, and a letter explaining why a foreigner is needed for the role. Ratios of Thai employees to foreign employees and registered capital requirements apply in most cases.

Companies promoted by the BOI (Board of Investment) use a faster, single-window process with different rules — a significant advantage for qualifying businesses.

Your personal documents — and what needs translation

Your side of the file typically includes your passport, degree certificates, transcripts, CV, and sometimes a police clearance or medical certificate. Degrees and civil documents issued abroad generally need a certified Thai translation, and some must be legalized by the issuing country's authorities and the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Name consistency matters: if your degree shows a different name than your passport (marriage, name change), include the linking document with a certified translation, or the application can stall.

Common mistakes

The most common problem is starting work before the permit is issued — even a few days of 'helping out' counts as illegal work. The second is a job description that does not match the actual duties; the permit lists a specific role and working outside it is a violation.

Another frequent issue is expired or inconsistent corporate documents from the employer side, which delays the whole application. Ask the employer for a complete, current document set before your visa run.
