What the Non-Immigrant ED visa covers

Thailand's Non-Immigrant ED visa is for foreign nationals who intend to study in the Kingdom — at universities, international schools, accredited language institutes, or recognized training programs. It is typically issued as a single-entry 90-day visa first, then extended in-country at the Immigration Bureau as the course progresses, commonly in 90-day increments tied to continued enrollment.

The visa category applies whether you are enrolling in a degree program, a Thai language course, or a vocational program, but the institution must be properly licensed and able to issue the official acceptance and enrollment letters that both the embassy and the Immigration Bureau require. Schools that cannot produce these letters in the correct format are a common cause of refused or delayed applications.

Documents you will need — and which ones need translation

The standard document set includes your passport, the school's acceptance letter, enrollment confirmation, school license documents, academic records from your home country, and — depending on your nationality and the consulate — a police clearance or background check. Any civil document not already in English or Thai, such as a birth certificate, diploma, or police record, must be translated by a certified translator, and some consulates require the translation to be legalized as well.

For Thai nationals' family members accompanying a student, or for documents issued in Thailand that must be used abroad, the reverse applies: Thai documents need certified English translation and, where required, legalization by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Because Thailand is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, an apostille alone is not accepted for Thai documents — consular legalization is the standard route. Always confirm the current requirements with the Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate where you will apply, as document lists differ slightly between posts.

Application steps, extensions, and 90-day reporting

Apply at a Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate outside Thailand with the full document set; processing times vary by post, so apply well before your course start date. After arrival, you must report your address (TM.30, filed by your landlord) and then extend your stay at the Immigration Bureau before the initial 90 days expire, presenting updated enrollment confirmation from your school each time.

ED visa holders are also subject to 90-day reporting: every 90 days of continuous stay you must notify Immigration of your current address, in person, online, or by post. Missing a report carries a fine. If you leave Thailand during your course, obtain a re-entry permit before departure or your visa will be voided — a single re-entry permit is cheaper and faster than reapplying for the visa itself.

Common mistakes that delay or void the visa

The most frequent problems are: enrolling in a school that is not properly licensed for visa support; letting the enrollment letter lapse before an extension; forgetting the re-entry permit before a trip home; and missing 90-day reports. Another recurring issue is inconsistent name spelling across documents — your passport, diploma, and translated records must match exactly, character for character.

Finally, an ED visa does not authorize work. Teaching, freelancing, or any paid activity on an education visa is a violation that can lead to visa revocation and blacklisting. If your plans change and you intend to work in Thailand, you must switch to the appropriate Non-Immigrant B visa and work permit. Verify every requirement with the Immigration Bureau or the Royal Thai Embassy before acting — rules are updated periodically and no third party can guarantee an outcome.

คำถามที่พบบ่อย

How long can I stay in Thailand on an ED visa?+

The initial visa is usually valid for a 90-day stay, extendable at the Immigration Bureau in increments (commonly 90 days) for as long as you remain enrolled and your school supports the extension. Total duration depends on your course and Immigration's discretion.

Do my documents need certified translation?+

Yes. Civil and academic documents not in English or Thai — diplomas, birth certificates, police clearances — must be translated by a certified translator, and some consulates require legalization as well. Confirm the exact list with the Royal Thai Embassy where you apply.

Can I work in Thailand on an education visa?+

No. The ED visa does not authorize any paid work. Working without a work permit can result in visa revocation, fines, and blacklisting. To work legally you need a Non-Immigrant B visa and a work permit.

What happens if I leave Thailand without a re-entry permit?+

Your visa becomes void the moment you depart. Always obtain a single or multiple re-entry permit from Immigration (or at the airport before departure) to keep your visa valid while traveling.
